Babywearing is the act of wearing baby in a structured carrier, soft wrap, pouch or ring sling instead of having them spend much of their time lying on their backs, in a swing or stroller. Babywearing has been practiced for centuries around the world by a variety of cultures. Keeping baby close to mom, especially during the months directly after birth (known as the 4th trimester), has a vast number of benefits for both mom and baby.

  1. Babies cry less.

Research has shown that babies who are worn for 3 hours a day cry 43% less overall and 54% less during evening hours.

  2. Babies are healthier.

Babywearing aids in physical and emotional development. Reduces the risk of SIDS and hip dysplasia.

  3. Stimulates babies.

Wearing your baby gives him the best seat of the house. Research shows babies learn better in a state of quiet alertness and being in this upright position gives babies a different view that enables them to observe and interact better.

  4. Fosters a bond between baby and caregiver.

The closeness between mother and child releases the hormone oxytocin, the hormone essential for maternal bonding.

  5. Encourages breastfeeding.

Oxytocin is also responsible for the “milk-ejection” reflex; keeping baby close encourages the production of this hormone. An added benefit is nursing can be done discretely if you are more comfortable nursing with a cover.

  6. Convenience.

Parents and caregivers can enjoy the convenience of having both hands free while assuring baby is happy and calm. Baby wearing can also be a savior with subsequent children. It allows you to wear your newborn/baby and continue to keep up with their older siblings.

  7.  Confident caregivers.

Knowing baby is close and being able to read his cues to meet his needs immediately brings parents peace of mind.

  8. Happy and calm babies!

Babies get reassured by the closeness; mom’s rhythm of breathing and heartbeat as well as the movements and feeling snug recreates a womb like environment.

  9. Connecting with your baby from the beginning is crucial for a secure attachment.

A secure bond teaches your baby to trust you; baby wearing takes your little one (or toddler!) to her safe place. Wearing your baby gives you the opportunity to be on the go all while knowing your baby is in the safest place she can be, closest to you!

Find a Carrier

You can find a carrier at almost any baby store, though not all carriers on the market are good for baby. Ensure that their hips are properly supported in an M position when in the carrier. Forward facing carriers most often DO NOT support this position.
